A Brief History of Drepung Gomang Monastery School Establishment

In the Year 1416 (The Fire Monkey year of Tibetan Almanac in the 7th Rabjung) the glorious & great Drepung Monastery, the source of learning and practice, was established. Initially, Gomang Monastery and later other institutions were gradually formed. Gomang Monastery has produced countless accomplished Great masters & Scholar such as “Drung Drakpa Rinchen”, “Khedrup Galeb Takleb”, “Kunkhen Choejung”and his successors, “Kunkhen Jamyang Shepa”, and “Gungthang Tenpe Donmey”. Drepung Monasteries upholding its lineage spread from Ladakh in the upper regions to Mongolia and China in the lower, numbering over a thousand. Later, after the revolution in 1959, and by the boundless compassion and kindness of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, a non-sectarian Buddhist Dharma center was re-established in Baksa in Assam, India. However, due to the intense heat and unsuitable environment, the Centre was relocated to the Mundgod Tibetan resettlement in 1969.

Gradually, many new students from Tibet, Tibetan settlements, Ladakh, Zanskar, Monpa, and other Himalayan and Mongolian regions arrived, engaging in studies encompassing teaching, debating, and composing. In the Year 1960, following the guidance of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, the administration of Gomang Monastery established “Drepung Gomang School”. Under the guidance of
Khen Rinpoche Ngawang Nyima and other elders, teachers were appointed, and around fifty students were divided into three classes, receiving instruction in Tibetan reading and writing, as well as memorization of religious texts and later, calligraphy and philosophy were also studied.

On 1st February 1979, the Dre Gomang Buddhist Cultural Society was officially registered under Karnataka Society Act 1960 and with the support of the Society, Drepung Gomang School began to progress and during the end of that year, English language instruction was introduced to all students. In the Year 1985, a new two-story school building construction was successfully completed. In year 1986, a grand opening ceremony was held for the new school, and with an increase in both teachers and students, a new era of progress began.

In the 1991, a new regulation was established requiring students to pass examinations to advance grades and need to graduate from the school upon completing the eighth grade. While retaining the existing curriculum, new subjects such as mathematics, Tibetan language, and Tibetan history were added. Later, logic and reasoning were added to the curriculum for grade four to Eight, and science
was introduced for grade six to eight.

In the year between 2017-2019, the school’s third Floor building and library were successfully
completed. In the Year 2023-2025, the entire School courtyard floor was renovated with modern red paving stones. The principal’s office has been improved and the school’s Education Hall was renovated with new desks, chairs, and cooling fans. The Kitchen room was expanded and equipped with quality kitchen equipment.

Currently, there are nearly three hundred students who are well cared by thirty-seven teachers and staffs. The curriculum consists of eight core subjects: Tibetan Language, English, Philosophy, and Memorization, Science and Mathematics, Tibetan history, and Calligraphy. Grammar and poetry are included within Tibetan language studies. Starting in 2023, computer classes were added for grade six,
seven, and eight.

Daily activities include singing Indian & Tibetan national anthems in the school Assembly Ground every morning, and reciting the Tibetan Prayer (Tse Mei Yönten) on Wednesdays. On Tuesday mornings, the cleanliness of the students’ robes is inspected. Normally, there are three class sessions in the morning and three in the afternoon. In the evening, grade one to three have two memorization sessions and one review session, while grade four to eight have four study sessions, including lectures and debates. There are fifteen-minute breaks between every two sessions. Each session lasts for forty to forty-five minutes.

The overall supervision of the school is provided by the Abbot of the monastery and the Members of the Society, but the principal is primarily responsible for overseeing the school activities. Below the principal are the teachers, followed by two School Captain, and then the class monitors, who oversee their respective classes. Mid-term examinations are held after three months, and final examinations are held after six months and annual examinations in April.

Thus, from the year 1976 till 2026, the school has gradually developed into a modern, fully-fledged educational institution. Moreover, it preserves the ancient monastic traditions. Today, this school is truly a Centre of knowledge with two wings – modern education and traditional monastic learning.
